Game Description:

In Sub Command take charge of the most deadly modern-day submarines in the world as you command three distinct submarines across two unique and challenging campaigns. Utilize cutting-edge technology to navigate the world's oceans to locate, track and destroy enemy convoys. Or, park your sub off hostile shores to deliver Tomahawk missiles to inland targets. Whether diving, scouring or surfacing, you control the smartest, stealthiest, and most feared subs in the water today.

Gameplay:

????Remember the original 688(I): Hunter/Killer? I sure played that one a lot, and maybe you did as well. From its makers now comes Sub Command, and it's even better! As we're all used to by now, you can choose between tutorial sessions, normal missions or a campaign. There are basically two campaigns available: you can either play the Soviets in their Akula class sub, or play the good old USA with either a Los Angeles (improved) or a brand new Seawolf. The story in the two campaigns is actually the same - you just get to play both sides of the coin.

????For those of you who never heard of 688(I): Hunter/Killer, let me give a typical situation aboard your sub: usddenly you get a report from your sonarman that he's got a contact. Or better yet, you went into the sonar room and found the contact yourself. Now you know something is out there, and even what direction it's in. But as yet, you've got no idea what type of contact it is, how far away it is or at what speed it's moving. To find out all this takes some painstaking manouvering, and, above all, patience! Yes, that's right, this is not an action-paced game, but how could a true sub simulator be? Just pretend to be a hole in the water, don't make too much noise and creep up on your target. Be sure what it is you're firing upon, most missions have just some bad guys out there and lots of innocent merchants. It won't really look to good on your resume if you just blew everything to hell (including your own navy) now, wouldn't it? Luckily there is also a time acceleration option, which makes all of this better managable - you can still wait it out in real-time, or gamble a bit that you're not detected and choose a faster pace.

????You can choose the level of control you want over your sub - either toggle all your crew on - which is the easiest option, since you'll have a sonarman who will keep track of all the targets and do the motion analysis for you, so you don't have to calculate their speed and position yourself - or do it all yourself. Of course, you can choose to take some people along for the ride, but do the radar (for instance) yourself.

????And for those who have finished all included missions, there is a mission editor which will let you make your own missions (or import them from 688(I): Hunter/Killer).

Gameplay gets 5 out of 5 stars.

Sound:

????Well, there is not really much to be said about the sound. As expected, usually it's dead quiet (but that's only when all is going well). The silence can be broken by active pings which will startle you out of your chair, and that's when things get hairy...

Sound gets 4 out of 5 stars.

Graphics:

????The game uses very nice 3D graphics, which isn't apparent at first. Most screens are simple control screens, like for instance the map: you see a map of the area, on which the position of your sub and other contacts (if any) are marked. Nowhere is a 3D object to be seen (at least not for the purists - if you want, you can get a 3D view of the selected object in a small window. But beware! This window only shows what you think is out there, not what is really there. So if you classify a simple oil tanker as a Soviet or American battleship, that's what you'll see in this window). But even the purists get their take: the images through the periscope are really very nice - look at the screenshots and see for yourself.

Graphics gets 4 out of 5 stars.

Overall:

????This simply is a must have for all the sub fans out there! Just be sure to steer clear from this if you don't have the patience, or you'll be sorely disappointed by the lack of action.

Overall Game gets 4.5 out of 5 stars.
