Game Notes:

Based on the 1996 movie starring George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino, this survival horror title sees you as Seth Gecko (Clooney's character) aboard a tanker-prison overrun by vampires. In order to survive, you'll need to help Seth find survivors and make use of an arsenal of weapons to battle the morphing vampires and other creatures. The movie is a classic therefore it is expected that the game would be just as good.

Gameplay:

The game is a 1st/3rd person action shooter, the same genre as the hyped Max Payne, but doesn't even bear resemblance to Max Payne's excellent gameplay and intuitive controls. What I normally do after launching a game is check the control options... when doing so I noticed there is no jump key available which limits your gameplay experience. What also disappointed me was the fact that you could not define which key you want to use in order to change weapons... it's either going by the numbers or hitting F4 which is extremely uncomfortable when using W,A,S,D to move around. To my relief at least mouse-look was available as in most of today's action shooters. The game is at first played in a 3rd person view but that can be changed during the game by hitting F1, I myself preferred the 3rd person view. You start the game in prison about to be executed, guilty of a crime you did not commit trying to escape by killing creatures and guards. You start off with a shotgun and move around from door to door until you pickup a pistol and a shotgun, overall there are 19 weapons. The game is kinda creepy and the undead creatures can surprise you by coming up from behind you or landing near you but after awhile of practice it becomes too expected and repetitive. There is a slow-mo feature in the game but don't get too excited as you won't really be dodging bullets... it just slows down your movement and everything is run at slow motion, but it's kinda crappy. The game itself has very-limited interactions and it is one of those "open doors, shoot everything" amateur type of games, nothing like Max Payne. The controls are pretty basic and some are missing, but the fact you can choose between 1st and 3rd person view is quite good, and also the variety of weapons is nice.

Gameplay gets 3 out of 5 stars.

Sound:

The sound used in the game doesn't improve the gaming experience at all. The music Rock/Metal which sounds quite good and fits the game well. The sound effects are horrendous and extremely repetitive... you can hit your enemy numerous times and it will make the same annoying grunting sound... it also makes an annoying sound effect when it attacks you. There is some good environmental music in the background while in the game which makes everything spooky and creepy but nothing special. The sound is just as basic and average as the gameplay.

Sound gets 3 out of 5 stars.

Graphics:

The best thing in the game are the graphics, which aren't amazing and incredible, but more then adequate. The game is displayed in 3D and there are nice cut-scenes and animations during the game which are also in 3D. The main character is the best 3D model in the game even though it doesn't feature very high textures... The other characters look horrible, polygons, textures you name it, just plain and low quality models. The lightning in the game is too dark and not so good IMO. The environment isn't detailed enough in my eyes and some of the sceneries look boring and exactly the same as others. The graphics are nice... and good... but not incredible.
Graphics gets 4 out of 5 stars.

Overall:

The game is not as good as the movie was, it had very high potential but fell short. The game can be compared to Max Payne, in that it's the same type of game, but Max Payne beats it by a very long margin. If you are a hardcore action gamer and need some more practice... sure give it a try, if not, I would stay far away.

Overall Game gets 3 out of 5 stars.
